Explaining AYP and Schools in Improvement Status

  • What does this mean?
    The US Department of Education removed the State's Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) waiver which means the State is required to return to determining annual progress for school districts.

    As part of the ESEA, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 required all states to create their own high academic standards for what a child should know and be able to do for all grades in English, Language Arts, Reading and Mathematics.  Every school is the state must improve each year until all students meet the state standards.  This yearly improvement of academic performance is referred to as Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).

    The ESEA/NCLB requires the Office of the State Superintendent (OSPI) to inform parents/guardians about district performance.  Marysville School District has been identified as a "district in improvement" and four schools have been identified as "schools in improvement".  You can find more specific data on how this determination was made at OSPI Title I, Part A
